Here’s your history lesson of the day.
Affiliation with the National Socialist German Workers’ Party does not, in fact, make one a “leftist” or “left-wing extremist”. The idea that the word “socialist” means that fascism, the actual type of government espoused by the Nazi party, is the logical extension of progressivism is facile and asinine. Here’s a hint: racial supremacy, legally enforced gender roles, execution of homosexual people, jingoism, statism, militarism, and corporatism, while not unheard of under “liberal” regimes, are not what we’d call the “go-to” hallmarks of progressive governments. Here’s a quote from the WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE (talk about a good time to link to Let Me Google That For You):
According to most scholars of fascism, there are both left and right influences on fascism as a social movement, and fascism, especially once in power, has historically attacked communism, conservatism and parliamentary liberalism, attracting support primarily from the “far right” or “extreme right.”
I blame Jonah Goldberg and his inane book “Liberal Fascism” for this – at least, the idea may have existed before his publicizing it, but he certainly gave a lot of stupid people ammunition. If you haven’t heard of this veritable masterpiece of scholarly discourse, here are a couple reviews to tickle your fancy. Apparently, the subheading of the book was originally: “The Totalitarian Temptation from Mussolini to Hillary Clinton”, some choice quotes are “[it is] impossible to deny that the New Deal was objectively fascistic” and “[Woodrow Wilson] was the twentieth century’s first fascist dictator”, and its author has said in an interview that “The only reason [Mussolini] got dubbed a Fascist and therefore a right-winger is because he supported World War I” (you know, not because he founded the Italian Fascist Party).
But, you know, this post isn’t about how Jonah Goldberg is an idiot. AFAIK, he hasn’t said anything about this latest act of domestic terrorism: a neo-Nazi white supremacist killing a (black) security guard at the DC Holocaust Museum.
So, dear right-wing talking heads (I’m looking at you, Limbaugh, Beck, and assorted other wingnuts),
Your attempts to dismiss and deny the current trend of extreme right-wing domestic terrorism, as well as your wholesale encouraging and enabling same, have been duly noted. Please return to your regularly scheduled incendiary lies.
